How to save money on a DJ

  • Look for part-time or hobbyist DJs. These DJs tend to cost less because they have other sources of income and do not have such a large overhead.
  • Reduce the size of your guest list. The fewer guests you invite the smaller the sound system will be needed.
  • Keep everything in one room/area. Keep things simple when holding your event. If the DJ only needs to set up once and only needs one sound system then costs will drop. The more places you need sound the more your costs will increase. More equipment = more money.
  • Pass on extras such as lighting effects, fog machines, etc. Music is what makes or breaks a party and that is what your guests will remember.
  • Have a friend or family member be your Emcee. The less services a DJ has to offer the more money you can typically save.
  • Pass on the dance-floor. This is such a waste of money and can cost more than the DJ! Just designate an area for dancing and call it good. People can dance on carpet and any hard surface.
  • Look for a DJ company that does a high volume business. These companies book a lot of DJs thus offer volume discount pricing in most cases.
  • Don’t have your event on Saturday. The busiest day of the week for a DJ is Saturday as this is when most everyone’s schedules line up to hold an event. Saturday pricing will always be your most expensive. Friday and Sunday pricing can sometimes be less but they also can be popular days. The most money can be saved Monday –Thursday.

Couples Choose Cheaper Weddings

Since the economy tanked in 2007, an increasing number of American couples are choosing to get married on the cheap, rather than shell out for expensive ceremonies and receptions. The reality is that newlyweds can start out their lives together deep in debt from expensive nuptials and that’s not the best way to begin the ‘happiest day of your life.’

In 2010, the average cost of a wedding was $23,867. To put this in perspective, that could be a down payment on a house.

There are many things you can do to reduce your costs and still have an elegant wedding:

• Have your reception at a friend or relative’s home

• Buy alcohol in bulk

• Plan your wedding with your mom or friend

• Use baked goods or homemade crafts as wedding favors

• Get married on a Sunday or other non-peak day

• Split the cost of flowers with another couple

• Invite fewer people

• Make your own invitations

• Rent your wedding dress (you wear it only one day)

Review your wedding expenses and determine which are nothing more than ‘impress other people items’. Spending a lot of money on a wedding just to impress people is not worth it if you have to go in debt to pay for it. True friends and family won’t care if your wedding costs $1,000 or $20,000. Spend what you’re comfortable with and enjoy your wedding day!

How To Avoid Wedding Debt

Important read on how to avoid wedding debt. Newsflash: stay out of debt by saving up in advance. Wedding debt is considered bad debt because it forces you to pay for the past rather than invest in the future. Sound familiar?

Some great advice here, including: plan your wedding in the off-season (October to March) and choose any day but Saturday. Time of day matters too… Hint: dinner weddings are not as cheap as lunch.

Not all parties are the same

A lot of people think that all DJs are the same but if that’s the case, will all DJs have the amount of equipment and type of music you need? For example some people need sound indoors and outdoors. Some people need sound in multiple rooms and/or multiple levels. Some people need a DJ with wireless microphones. Others may want lighting effects while others want a DJ with karaoke and/or a combination of all the above.

When shopping for DJs, make sure they are asking you specifics about your party instead of trying to get you to sign on the dotted line first. Without learning more about your needs, how will either of you know if you are a good fit for each other? Remember, the more equipment a DJ provides, the more it will cost and the longer it will take to set up and tear down.
